Bones that break are fractures. Fractures are either OPEN (break through skin) or CLOSED. These are the classifications of fracture:

Greenstick or Simple - bone is cracked but still in one piece
Comminuted- Bone shattered into pieces
Stress fracture - from abnormal stress to the bone beyond it's normal ability
Plate fracture - separates the growth plate (epiphysial plate) from the bone. Causes distortion of bone and early arthritic change.
Spiral - bone is twisted into multiple pieces
